AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) has disclosed pricing for its eagerly awaited Ryzen 7000 X3D processors—the ones with 3D V-Cache that promise better frame rate performance in games. There is both good and terrible news.
As shown in the table above, the new CPUs are much more expensive than their predecessors. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D will retail for $699, $100 more than the Ryzen 9 7950X’s current online price.
The Ryzen 9 7900X3D will cost $599, which is the same price as the current Ryzen 9 7950X, which has more cores, and approximately $150 more than the Ryzen 9 7900X. Lastly, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D costs $449, which is almost $100 more than the Ryzen 7 7700X and the same price as the Ryzen 9 7900X, which has more cores.
How do these processors compare to other Ryzen models?
However, while the additional price may be a letdown for PC gamers seeking an update, these CPUs provide a number of significant benefits. In contrast to AMD’s original 3D V-Cache model, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the new CPUs have similar clock speeds to their non-X3D predecessors.
For instance, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D has a max boost frequency of 5.7 GHz, the same as the Ryzen 9 7950X, but with a lower base frequency and presumably a lower all-core boost frequency as well. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D, however, has a highest boost clock of just 5 GHz, compared to 5.4 GHz for the Ryzen 7 7700X, and it also has a 300 MHz lower base frequency.
This should result in improved performance outside of games and in games that don’t benefit as much from 3D V-Cache compared to the previous CPU. Then, of course, there is the promise of much faster performance in many games. This could make the new CPUs the fastest option for gamers, beating both AMD’s current CPUs and Intel’s 13th Gen machines.
The advantage this time around is that core counts do not end at eight, but there are 12- and 16-core alternatives that could be ideal for gamers who also engage in content creation.
AMD’s Ryzen 7000 CPUs and Socket AM5 motherboards have found sluggish adoption due to competition from Intel, high platform costs as a result of its decision to only support DDR5 memory, and expensive motherboard prices.
The new CPUs are widely regarded as a potential sales catalyst for AMD. Since the launch of its 7000-series Zen 4 CPUs last year, this has resulted in a substantial price reduction.
